In the early days of Celtic Colours, Festival co-founder and longtime Artistic Director Joella Foulds expressed her opinion that a festival is not doing its job if it’s not making new things happen, noting that an important legacy of Celtic Colours is the brilliant collaborations that result from musicians getting a chance to work together. We’re taking that to heart with tonight’s concert. Perfect Pairings will see artists who don’t usually work together pairing up to share their talents with each other. Dirk and Amelia Powell’s roots in the bayous of Louisiana and the mountains of Kentucky will find common ground with fiddler and dancer Mairi Rankin’s deep roots in Cape Breton’s tradition. Scottish guitarist Anna Massie and the multi-talented Troy MacGillivray have played together before, notably on Troy’s 2005 album Eleven. We’re looking forward to their onstage reunion. Buddy MacDonald and Shane Pendergast are both renowned songwriters so it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with. And Rose Morrison is a frequent collaborator with artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Tonight she teams up with American duo Rakish for some songs and tunes.
