Farewell to the Teacup
An Ode to Thunder Cove’s Teacup Rock
Farewell to the teacup, we’ve had our last sip
The sea took you down in the gulp of its grip
With the scrape of a white raging ivory tooth
Farewell to the teacup, the shrine of my youth
You once were an elephant in cool command
A guard at the meeting of water and sand
Where the young had their fun and old gulls sang their songs
You once were an elephant gentle and strong
You once were a cliff where a field took its breath
While the wind skirted ‘round in your marram grass dress
The daring came close to the edge and looked out
You once were a cliff with no whisper of doubt
You once were the Island, your blood flowing deep
A teapot for all of our to stories to steep
Together we conjured a curious brew
You once were the Island that rose from the blue
Farewell to the teacup, so much has been lost
Since your final frail form to the ocean was tossed
A shapeshifting life and a watery grave
Farewell to the teacup, the joy that you gave
